Marie Fun Friday: Meet Miqua Johnson

We’re welcoming a couple of new members to the team this month! This week, we’re featuring a Fun Friday interview with our new team assistant, Miqua (also known as Dominique) Johnson! Don’t be shy and say hello!

How’s it going?

Better than ever before!

Where are you from?

My mom is from Germany and is a mix of French and German, and my father is from the US, a mix of Native American and Afro American. So I’m feeling quite comfortable in this international environment at SoundCloud. I was born and raised in the South of Germany, more precisely in Frankonia, but since I’m American, there was a little back and forth moving between Germany and the United States.

What were you doing before SoundCloud? How’d you end up here?

Technically, I’m a TV-Producer with a graduate in Media Economics. I worked for a magazine, as a DJ-Booker and in different advertisement agencies. Between all those jobs, it became more and more clear that I’m happiest when I can be an organizer, and since I was a big fan of SoundCloud since its launch, I was burning to work here!

What kind of music are you into and why?

It depends on what I’m doing. When I’m at home, I listen to jazz, funk & soul (specifically Curtis Mayfield). When I’m on the run, I listen to industrial (NiN for example) or hardcore (Snapcase). When I’m feeling creative, I’m listening to classical (Robert Schumann) and when I’m going out, I listen to techno & house (Marco Carola, Crosstown Rebels and many more).

On SoundCloud, I often listen to my friends’ music, like Bara Bröst:

Or others, like Audiofly:

What do you like the most about SoundCloud so far?

It is the loveliest place to work in the world! And that’s no exaggeration. I appreciate the little things, like the politeness in social interaction, even when there’s time pressure. It seems like everybody enjoys sharing his or her knowledge with one another. I’ve seen quite a few other companies and I can certainly say that more kindness at SoundCloud is almost impossible!

Can you give us a fun fact about yourself?

I’m a Synesthete.

Wow, that’s kind of crazy, and cool!

Yes, I love to see what happens when I hear stuff (music and voices) and see what images my head creates.

That’s Miqua! Our synesthete, organized team assistant! Feel free to follow her on Twitter or SoundCloud!

Marie SoundCloud Local: Newcastle upon Tyne

Picture taken by penzo07, found on Flickr

As part of our new community series SoundCloud Local, this week we checked out the unsuspecting city of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK! Not only were we in this city for the Music Futures event run by Generator, but we were also checking out the diverse range of SoundCloud users here. And, we’re inviting you to listen to the talent of each one below!

Stig
Stephen Patterson (aka Stig) is an experienced and generous producer/musician. We asked him how he felt about SoundCloud: “It’s exactly what I was looking for. A place to share my work for free, exactly where people can get at it [...] I think every musician should be on here. A clean, modern, easy to use site with an emphasis on original material. ” Thanks, Stephen!

SDF

Rising out of the “waste lands of Northern England”, SDF is an avant-pop/noise-disco/cyber-funk/eletro-folk band (phew!) that wants to get you dancing like never before! These guys just got the party started and are serious about keeping it going! Don’t believe it? Hear proof below!

Middle Children
Middle Children describe themselves as electronic rock. The four guys that make up Middle Children have a long list of influences, which you can check out on their SoundCloud page (linked below, of course). If you just want to know what the band sounds like though, have a listen to their latest EP below!

Cerebral Scars
The creator behind Cerebral Scars likes to draw and make this dark, eerie electro (which can be heard below)! From what we can tell, he spends most of his time being a producer and illustrator based out of Newcastle. Hear some of the sounds he’s created below!

Coney Island Sound
At the beginning of the month, Coney Island Sound was one of our SoundClouders of the Day! Coney Island Sound is actually the musical project of Ewan Gordon. He creates his music with field recordings and vintage instruments. You can have a listen to what this sounds like exactly below!

David PromoJam + SoundCloud = Awesome

CultureJam, based in sunny Los Angeles, has been helping artists and brands launch exciting social campaigns with ease since 2009. They recently launched a new social marketing platform called PromoJam that let’s you run viral Twitter campaigns in a few easy steps. One of the promotions they provide is Tweet to Listen and it’s now powered exclusively by SoundCloud. Yeehhhh!

  1. Go here to sign-up for PromoJam and create your first audio promo. You can use the code PROMOCLOUD at checkout to get 20% off.
  2. After account creation, you’ll be sent to the EDIT PROMO page, simply click the SAVE button at the bottom of the page to lock your promo in.
  3. Click the Exclusive tab and then click the Connect with SoundCloud button. This will send you to SoundCloud where you will allow PromoJam access to your tracks. Clicking Allow will send you back to PromoJam where you’ll be able to select a track or playlist from the appropriate drop-down. Once you’ve done that, click SAVE.
  4. Next, you’ll want to click the Social Networks tab. From here, PromoJam will instruct you on how to setup the Twitter application credentials you’ll need. Once that is created and added to your promo, click SAVE.
  5. Click the Design tab to adjust the aesthetics of your campaign. PromoJam provides some basic adjustments with their Basic account but you can always upgrade if you’re looking for more customization. Click Preview in the top right at any point to see your progress.
  6. Finally, click the gear drop-down in the top right corner and the Launch link to launch your promotion.

We’re so pumped to have this integration in place, and CultureJam has promised tons of enhancements to their SoundCloud promotions in the future. Let us know if you launch any promos using PromoJam!

If you have any questions or comments, I’m lee@soundcloud.com or @leemartin on Twitter. Enjoy!
