It is the day of Saint Valentine, a day to cherish those we love and let it be known. Love is a universal language, spoken by humans and by animals. This week in Found Sounds we’re not going to get all soppy on you, we’re going to take a listen, and learn how it’s done in the animal kingdom. This week in Found Sounds we’ll be exploring the sounds of animal mating calls, the chat up lines and the woo’ing that goes on on Valentines day in the wild.

How would the story of “The Princess and the Frog” sound in real life? Let’s listen to those croaky creatures call out to their princess.

Some of the wild’s most vicious creatures have their soft side too! Caught in Bradenton, Florida, Bob Duthie recorded the sounds of an aligator mating call.

Now here’s something I bet you didn’t expect to stumble across today, this week, or even this year. The final mating call is from the friendly badger.

We hope this Valentines we were able to entertain you with the stranger side of love. Whoever you’re spending your day with, remember at least you’ll be treated with wine and chocolate rather than these sounds of the wild!

Edward Found Sounds: We’re Football Crazy, Football Mad!

There’s something about the game of football that bring people together. At what other event would you see men and women of all ages coming together to chant, shout, laugh and cry at a ball? Each week masses of people visit their local stadium and put themselves through this roller-coaster of emotions. The sounds of elation when a goal is scored, or the groans of misery as your team looses are unique to these sporting events.

The British Premier League is the home of football and has some of the most entertaining and die-hard fans. Chelsea FC have recently joined SoundCloud to share with the world the dedication their fans show week on week to the team.

Liverpool FC are one of the most successful, long-running teams in the English league. Their infamous Kop end at Anfield Road is packed out each weekend as fans chant on ‘The Reds’.

Our local team here at SoundCloud is FC Union, who’re recognized as one of Germany’s non-conformist, “kult”, clubs run by the fans. After struggling financially for numerous seasons, FC Union are finally building up a following and have even made it up to the 2 Bundesliga. As a team lead by their fans, you can imagine they go pretty wild when they’re winning…

Whoever your team are, and whatever your chants, the sounds from inside a football ground are something that stay with you. Everyone remembers their first match and if you’ve never been to one, it’s worth it for the atmosphere alone.

Finally the winter has hit. Albeit a little late, we’re beginning to see the snow flakes fall and feel the icy winds rush around us. But what do we hear over these winter months?

It is the cracking of ice, crunching of snow and the whistle and thud of snowball fights that remind me of winter. Last month Abstraction caught this field recording of the creaking and cracking of ice on a lake, this spooky recording transposes directly in to the influences you can hear in this users music. Taking inspiration from the world around him Abstraction creates some great, haunting, ambient music.

Winter can be a beautiful time, when snow covers the ground it transforms everything around us. Just like in the Autumn, when you walk down the street you’ll hear the rustling of the leaves from peoples feet, in Winter you’ll hear the crunching of snow. What better place to talk a walk in the snow than Central Park….

After a day spent outside, what better way is there to escape the cold of the snow by settling down in an armchair by a roaring fire…
