Ben SoundCloud Voices

SoundCloud Voices is a weekly Community feature focusing on new spoken word creators found on SoundCloud. It might be a podcast, radio show, audio book, interview, audio messages, a poem, anything! Keep an eye out every Thursday for a new post.

This week on SoundCloud Voices we take a look a highly admired and awarded journalist Anthony Shadid who sadly died last week.  An American of Lebanese decent, Anthony won the pulitzer prize twice for his exceptional coverage of the U.S occupation of Iraq and introduced a wide audience of people to the events in the Middle East.  He reported on Libya, Tunisia, Iraq and Lebanon to name a few countries he worked.  He sadly died of an asthma attack while covering the confilct in Syria.  The following recordings are a collection of recordings of Anthony himself, retrospectives and tributes.

First up is Democracy Now’s retrospective piece on Anthony.  It’s an amazing listen, you can hear past interviews with him where, for example, he recollects him and his team were kidnapped in Libya.  Take a listen to hear that story and more below.

Then there is the International Center for Journalists, a non profit organisation which promotes quality journalism, posted an old recording from Anthony speaking at an event in 2010 about the media’s role in covering the Middle East.  He recounts some incredible events from his time working for the Washington Post in Baghdad.

And finally radio station KCRW were able to speak to Anthony’s colleague at the New York Times (another publication he worked at), Susan Chira.  She recalls Anthony’s character and some of his incredible stories in Syria and Iraq.  Take a listen below.
