SoundCloud Voices is a weekly Community feature focusing on new spoken word creators found on SoundCloud. It might be a podcast, radio show, audio book, interview, audio messages, a poem, anything! Keep an eye out every Thursday for a new post.

It’s that time of year again; starting tomorrow Edinburgh opens it’s doors for the Fringe Festival. Three weeks of performers of all shapes, sizes, genres and budgets will be flocking to Scotland to show case their performances. It you like comedy, theatre, poetry, music, cabaret, dance and more then this is the festival for you! This year we are proud to announce we have partnered up directly with Fringe enabling any performer to add sound to their performer profile. The idea behind the partnership was to empower all performers to show off what their show will be about – that can be in the shape of a short audio description, and snippet of a past show, an interview, podcast – anything audio! Take a listen below to some performers sounds and visit their Fringe profiles on EdFringe.com to see the integration in full effect!

First up take a listen to Helen Arney – a comedian, musician and scientist! A regular contributor to the BBC radio show Infinite Monkey Cage, Helen’s show is comedy stand-up, science, songs and silliness. No need for me to explain, just take a listen to below and please visit her Fringe Performer Profile for more audio!

Dracula: Sex, Sucking and Stardom was too good a title not to take a quick listen to. Last Chance Saloon, celebrated purveyors of Guilty Pleasure Theatre, revamp Bram Stoker’s Dracula with their own brand of the ridiculous to create a slick show of absurd, deft theatre comedy. Follow Jonathan Harker to Transylvania where he discovers the Count’s evil plans and love of all things showbiz. Take a listen to some samples of the show on their performer profile.

Next up, ‘imagine if Derren Brown was funny’. Well that’s what you get with comedy mind reader Doug Segal, with his show “How to read minds and influence people”. Take a listen to an interview below with Doug on a radio show where he does a little bit of mind reading, and check out his performer profile.

As part of the festival, there is also a “Free Fringe”. Dodgers Comedy are one of these shows, offering up a jam-packed hour of stand-up from the cream of Norwich’s up-and-coming comedy crop, all for free! Take a listen below and check out the rest of the audio from all the stars of the show on their profile!

Finally, amongst all the comedy, theatre and cabaret, there is also a lot of musicians performing at the festival. Death Boogie caught our attention which is a multimedia hip hop poetry musical and features the group The Might Third Rail from New York.

Join us for a Meetup at the Pear Tree on Sunday at 7pm in Edinburgh! We want to see you there, for more information RSVP via our Meetup.com event here.

He has also studied astrophysics, computer science, and philosophy and has worked as a physicist, labourer, roadie for bands, car mechanic, film-maker, hospital scientific officer, biomedical engineer, TV weatherman, taxi driver, and medical doctor! So if you want to know more about the effects of swallowing gum, the Coriolis effect, “furry male allergies” or Higgs Boson, Karl is your man. Take a listen to a couple of shows below and follow him on SoundCloud!

Our other ABC Australia focussed show this week is Sunday Night, “a babble about religion, politics and all things ethnic”. Ahhh summer…the time to let all your worries slip away and allow the creative juices to flow freely! In the spirit of encouraging a creative summer (and fall!), we’re super excited to announce the second annual SoundCloud Fellowship program which we just announced this week!

We’re hoping to inspire and support original, inventive, imaginative projects of all types, so don’t let the summertime heat kill your motivation...check out the proposal process and submit your ideas!

For this week’s Voices post, we thought we’d take a look back at a few of last year’s fellowship projects to provide you with some inspiration…

United Sounds

We SoundClouders are proud to be part of a global community, and no project better exemplifies that than last year’s fellowship project by Alex Stiver, United Sounds. Alex collected recordings of community members reading The UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights in their native tongue. To date, the project has collected recordings of The Declaration in more than 50 languages! This project highlighted the power of voice and the passion for collaboration within the SoundCloud community!

Check out some of the recordings submitted to the project’s SoundCloud Group:

Sounds of My City

Another fantastic project was Katie Needs’ Sounds of My City, in which Katie mapped Toronto in sounds she collected while rediscovering her city! The project also harnessed her fans’ passion for audio and encouraged them to explore their neighborhoods and share the sounds they collected along the way.

The NYC Nomad

Ed Casabian, aka The NYC Nomad, chose to explore his city in a slightly different way. Ed lived in over 50 neighborhoods in New York City, finding a new place to stay every single week! Along the way, Ed sought out the most interesting person in the area for an interview. Ed not only used audio to document his experience, but also as a medium to engage the communities that were hosting him.

Here’s one of my favorite pieces from Ed’s project:

So, inspired yet? We hope so! Get at us with your awesome ideas ASAP!

Fellowship applications will be accepted until Wednesday, July 25.
