With last week’s SoundCloud Inaugural Hack day 5 days us behind we thought the theme of SoundCloud Voices this week should be on hacking, tech and startups.  There are a number of podcasts that focus on these worlds for your listeners pleasure on SoundCloud, take a listen to the following and start following them!

Firstly we have the guys at Lifehacker, the site that curates tips, tricks and technology for better living in the digital age. Here’s their lastest podcast where they discuss reviving your old laptop, migrating Google data, using tablets as communal devices, and making grocery shopping suck a bit less.

Next up are the guys from Ars Technica who by happy coincidence talk about a certain form of hacking this week. Recently a hacker infiltrated Mat Honan’s (Senior Writer at Wired)) life, stole and deleted his data. This hack required a few steps in succession that exploited authentication methods used in popular services like Amazon, Google, Twitter and Apple’s iCloud service. Mat wrote about this act of vandalism against him, and he is still dealing with the effects of losing his information.  Mat Honan visits the Ars Technicast in this episode to talk in detail about the fallout after the theft and wiping (yes, they wiped his devices), and what should you do to protect your data.

Moving over to the start up world, take a listen to the hefty amount of podcasts coming from TWIStartups. Hosted by serial entrepreneur Jason Calacanis and a rotating group of guest experts, TWIStartups bring you a bi-weekly take on the best, worst, most outrageous and interesting startups and stories from the Web world. For example, take a listen to our very own CEO Alex was interviewed on the show.

And finally back to some good old fashioned, wholesome hacking. If you don’t know already, we recently had a hack weekend, aptly named WE Hack (Weekend Hack), this was an opportunity for members of the company to come together and spend Friday and Saturday hacking APIs, making new websites and apps and even hover crafts. Take a read of this previous blog post for more. One hack created was the Never Ending Story – basically start a story, record it with the SoundCloud mobile app and then pass it on for someone to continue the story. Here’s the result of some 30 odd SoundClouder employees ad libbing a tale.

SoundCloud Voices this week takes a look at the wide variety of radio shows that CBC have been uploading to their Radio One account. As the public station for Canada, with Radio One being the news and information channel, you can count on their being some interesting spoken word content. Here’s a break down of some of the main shows they have been sharing.

Firstly we have Ideas, hosted by Paul Kennedy. As a show that describes it itself as a radio program on contemporary thought, you know you can expect some interesting topics, such as philosophy, science, music, religion and history. Here’s a recent show about Bees.

Next up is Q. Hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, it’s the national arts magazine show for CBC and is also syndicated all over the U.S by the guys at Public Radio International. You can expect celebrities and figures in the entertainment industry, yet they still encourage topics and conversations on broader topics such as politics, business, sports and music. Take a listen to this show featuring Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe.

If you like technology and Culture then Spark should be your show de choix. Hosted by Nora Young, it’s quite a unique show as the team encourages the audience to send in suggestions for the show, write on the blog, and even record interviews which they use on the show. You could even use SoundCloud for that!

CBC’s also have a magazine show called Day 6 which looks into an eclectic mix of the week’s stories. Host Brent Bambury brings the audience, opinionated columnists, provocative guests and humorous takes on the stories people are talking about. Take a listen to Saturday’s show which deals with the following intriguing topics – Hate Music, Olympic Mascot Creator, Food on Mars and Kidnapping Celebrities on Egyptian Reality TV to name a few.

There are so many more shows to listen to on the CBC account, such as Writers & Company, As It Happens, Babel and The Current. So start following the CBC Radio One account for your regular spoken word goodness!

David Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012: superheroes, Joffrey Baratheon, comedians & more!

Artists, comedians, actors, actresses & superheroes all came together last weekend for the first weekend of the Edinburgh Fringe festival in Scotland. We even joined in on the fun, packing our bags and flying up to Edinburgh to cover the event! So what is the Fringe Festival you might be asking? Good question! In the organizers own words:

“The official site, for over 50 years Scotland’s capital city has seen a unique explosion of creative energy within the Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world.”

This year SoundCloud and the Fringe partnered together to create a Soundbooth where performers and participants of the festival could come and share their sounds to their Edinburgh Fringe profiles via SoundCloud. Rachel from the Edinburgh Fringe Marketing staff explains why SoundCloud + Fringe = love.

We had some amazing characters stop by and record with us including Mr. Millennium, Andy & the Prostitutes, Sophie & more!

On Sunday we held a meetup at the Pear Tree near Fringe Central. Some fine folks came out in the rain and received serious swag in the form of shirts, buttons and stickers! More importantly we got to meetup with some amazingly active community members including Bob, Amelia, John and comedian Michael Legge!

Oh and we also met Jack Gleeson from Game of Thrones who said he loves using SoundCloud!

Can you believe it? That is only the beginning! The Edinburgh Fringe Festival will be going on this whole month until August 26th! To follow along with the sounds of the festival, check out our Edinburgh Fringe Festival curated set here & we hope to see you there next year!
