Trains aren’t usually the fastest way to get around these days, but there’s still something special about them. Maybe that’s the reason they make such appealing targets for field recorders: from freight trains to subways, we’ve got some cool train sounds on the ‘Cloud!
The first train sound comes courtesy of SoundClouder Mark Durham, who lives in London and recorded a snippet from the London Underground. Bonus points for getting a special delay announcement on there!

The next train sound comes courtesy of Surround 2011, which provided a surround sound workshop for recording beginners. They just wrapped up the workshop this week, and now their SoundCloud profile is full of cool sounds, like this steam train. Check it out!

Jabo Giddens usually sticks to electronic dance music — but lucky for us, he also makes some cool field recordings. The rhythms of the freight train chugging down the track in this recording almost sound like electronic percussion, even! Give it a listen.

Frank Bry, who goes by the appropriate name of The Recordist, makes all kinds of great professional recordings. So his cool train pass-by sound, from his hometown of Sagle, Idaho, is no surprise! It’s pretty amazing the kind of sounds you can capture while on the road on a train trip.
