SoundCloud Voices is a weekly Community feature focusing on new spoken word creators found on SoundCloud. It might be a podcast, radio show, audio book, interview, audio messages, a poem, anything! Keep an eye out every Thursday for a new post.
Voices this week takes a look at some charity organisations using SoundCloud, ranging from Marie Curie, to BAFTA and the Children’s Radio Foundation.
First up Marie Curie has been using SoundCloud to embed audio into their site. Using the mini player the cancer care charity have posted recordings of their nurses explaining the support they provide and where donations go in terms of the help they provide. Take a look on their site for an example and listen below.
Next up is BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts who fund the development of all art forms of the moving image. They have been using SoundCloud as part of their education initiative. They record and share Q&As with various directors, actors and experts in the industry. Take a listen to one of their Q&As with Martin Scorsese and Ben Kingsley about new film Hugo below and check out their site to listen to more Q&As with some of the films up for BAFTA nominations!
Finally the Children’s Radio Foundation gives young people the skills and tools to make their voices heard. Using radio and other low-cost communication technologies, they build local capacity to create and sustain community-based youth media initiatives. Doing great work in various countries in Africa, the charity is also supported by the likes of MIT and UNICEF. Take a listen below to one of the many great pieces the children make as part of the program.

Found Sounds is a SoundCloud community feature focusing on some of the most weird and wonderful sounds that can be found on SoundCloud. Count on new installments with some of our favorite sounds each Tuesday!
There’s something about the game of football that bring people together. At what other event would you see men and women of all ages coming together to chant, shout, laugh and cry at a ball? Each week masses of people visit their local stadium and put themselves through this roller-coaster of emotions. The sounds of elation when a goal is scored, or the groans of misery as your team looses are unique to these sporting events.
The British Premier League is the home of football and has some of the most entertaining and die-hard fans. Chelsea FC have recently joined SoundCloud to share with the world the dedication their fans show week on week to the team.
Liverpool FC are one of the most successful, long-running teams in the English league. Their infamous Kop end at Anfield Road is packed out each weekend as fans chant on ‘The Reds’.
Our local team here at SoundCloud is FC Union, who’re recognized as one of Germany’s non-conformist, “kult”, clubs run by the fans. After struggling financially for numerous seasons, FC Union are finally building up a following and have even made it up to the 2 Bundesliga. As a team lead by their fans, you can imagine they go pretty wild when they’re winning…
Whoever your team are, and whatever your chants, the sounds from inside a football ground are something that stay with you. Everyone remembers their first match and if you’ve never been to one, it’s worth it for the atmosphere alone.
That’s all for this week’s Found Sounds! Tune in next week for more crazy sounds from the ‘Cloud.
The varied contribution in the community of now more than 10 million SoundClouders around the world keeps blowing our minds every day. We’ve seen so many different ways you’ve all made an impact in one way or another: whether they’re through meaningful connections formed, experimental collaborations, offline or online evangelists and supporters. The spirit of community has always been at the heart of who we are. In the past, some of you have stepped up as leaders within the community. To us, you are heroes and we’ve got something for you. Welcome to our new Community program: The SoundCloud Heroes. With the SoundCloud Hero program, we’re building a global network of local offline & online volunteer SoundCloud ambassadors.
Who are we looking for? You’re an inspiring connector, communicator and leader in your community who gets things done. You understand SoundCloud’s mission to unmute the web with all forms of audio. You see sound as the missing element on the web for expressing yourself. You’re enthusiastic to support SoundCloud’s mission on a local level with a global impact.
What you’ll be doing:
- Local user collaborations
- Speaker series (e.g. spoken word nights at your favorite local cafe)
- Sound theme events and “missions” that can be collaborated with the other local SoundCloud heroes
- Or simply grabbing some brews with other local SoundClouders at a meetup
Whatever great and impactful ideas and goals you have in mind that are specific to expanding the SoundCloud community in your city, we want to help you! We’ll provide you with guidance to help you on your way. To say thanks, we’ll hook you up with some sweet swag, some of which includes:
- A trip to meet and work with our team in either San Francisco or Berlin
- Limited edition t-shirts
- Official cards with your name on it
- Supply of pins, stickers and t-shirts
- More surprises to be added throughout the year!
Where? We’re starting our search for heroes in US metropolitan cities like Austin, San Francisco, New York City and Chicago. If you’re not in one of these US cities or outside of the US but think you can still bring the SoundCloud game to your city, let us know where you’re at and why you’d make a great hero. Don’t worry! We’ll be in touch when we’re ready to expand the program throughout the year.
How do I apply? Apply here. The SoundCloud Community Team will review all applications and choose people we feel will best represent SoundCloud in their local communities. The program will be ongoing and we’re not limiting the number of SoundCloud Heroes in each city. Good luck! If you have any questions, reach out to heroes[at]soundcloud[dot]com
