Meet Syracuse SoundCloud Hero: Jared Brickman of One Hello World
One Hello World has been covered by the likes of Mashable and The Next Web as a “soundtrack to your voicemails.” Jared Brickman is the man behind the project and is the SoundCloud Hero for Syracuse (let’s hear it for Upstate New York!). He hosts his tracks on SoundCloud and wants to help lead and build the SoundCloud community in Syracuse, stemming from his experience of listening and communicating with individuals worldwide.
What do you do? How do you use SoundCloud in your life?
I record soundtracks to voicemails for a project I call One Hello World. People from all across the planet phone to leave me candid messages about current events, relationships, the little things in their lives etc. Then, playing off select callers’ stories, themes and/or emotions, I mix in musical responses much like a film-score composer might do.
SoundCloud is an essential part of One Hello World not only in that it gives me a place to post the project’s final recordings, but it also presents an opportunity to collaborate with independent musicians (like my connection via the platform and subsequent collaborative track “All My Dad Cares about is Money” featuring SoundClouder Ben Z).
What are your aspirations for the SoundCloud community in your city?
With SoundCloud’s help, I hope to bring more of the local arts community together. There’s so many talented creators living in the Syracuse area and I think they stand to benefit from connecting with those they have yet to meet. To that end, I plan to host SoundCloud fueled meetups, jam sessions, performances and creative community projects.
Recently, a friend of mine made a connection, via SoundCloud, with a locally established electronic musician. I watched as they posted their collaborative sketches (and eventually a final track) on their SoundCloud pages. This relationship led to an opportunity for my friend to hear his collab track played as a part of an opening act for one of his personal heroes: KOAN Sound. Later that night, he got to hang out with his hero, all the while talking music and taking notes from the pro. Those are the kind of connections I’d like to foster through real life SoundCloud meetups!
What is your favorite place in the city and why?
My favorite place to play in Syracuse has since been turned into a sandwich shop: Coffee Pavillion. It was a tiny, but comfortable coffee shop/wine bar in downtown Syracuse. The establishment was friendly to the local creative community and regularly hosted independent artists, open mic nights and jazz jams. On any given Friday night, you could visit the Pavillion to get a taste of the wonderful jazz scene we have here in Central New York. The regular get togethers even attracted New York City professionals to ply their skills for a tune or two when they were in town.
There’s plenty of other great venues for performing here in Cusetown, but since the focus of my most recent project has been online, I haven’t had the opportunity to gig out much lately.
What is your favorite sound and why?
The bottom octaves of a piano. You can make the entire harp shimmer by suppressing the sustain pedal and playing a few choice chords. There’s no sound like it.
