Meet Anaheim, CA SoundCloud Hero: Monica Dockery

Please give a warm welcome to Monica Dockery, a self-taught musician who is looking to continue and lead collaborations with other SoundClouders through the SoundCloud Heroes program. Give her collaboration tracks a listen and get involved with her incredible collaboration idea (see below). Oh, and we can’t agree more that the sound of the ocean is a favorite, too!

What do you do? How do you use SoundCloud in your life?
I am a stay-at-home mom of a very energetic 4 year-old boy. I used to be a teacher of children with special needs, but now my focus is on homeschooling my son. I have always been a poet, since I can remember and have always had a deep love for music. About a year ago, I decided I’d start putting some of my songs to music. At the time, I had no idea how to make tracks, record, or play an instrument. I just knew it was something I wanted to do. So, I borrowed a guitar…that is now mine :) and started teaching myself how to play.

I began messing around with tracks on GarageBand. Then, I started putting songs together and posting them on my Words & Music blog. A follower on my blog introduced me to SoundCloud and since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to share my songs and to collaborate with several other SoundClouders. It has been such a great experience and I am learning so much. I’m looking forward to doing more and eventually putting a complete project together.

What is the collaboration idea that you would like to accomplish with the SoundCloud community?
There are a few collaboration ideas I had in mind. One is to rally up a diverse group of SoundClouders to put together a collection of works/sounds that, when combined, tells one cohesive story…much like a movie. Ideally, one would listen to the collection and will be able to distinguish the characters, the setting, and follow the storyline from beginning to end. Another idea I had is to get a team of female SoundClouders to collaborate on a project that is aimed at raising awareness of women who have been sexually and/or physically abused. My hope is to team up with other SoundClouders and with an organization called Women for Women to accomplish this. If people are willing, I would love to have the women who collaborated on the project to be a part of a fundraising event for this charity.
