What’s next in music: DNMO’s exploratory electronic
With the expansion of “First on SoundCloud,” we’re celebrating that first-time feeling of music discovery by surfacing twenty new artists that you need to know.
Last week we introduced you to OSHUN’s intergalactic hip-hop, and today we’re spotlighting another brand of genre-nonconformity with 17-year-old UK producer DNMO’s multi-layered approach to EDM.
At age five, DNMO (b. Aiden Morgan) started playing the drums and was dead-set on being a drummer – that is, until he stumbled upon Drum & Bass. And after blasting Zeds Dead’s “Eyes On Fire” remix on repeat at age 11, DNMO was inspired to start producing his own stuff. Two years ago he released his first remix “Sakura” on SoundCloud, and in 2018 his journey came full circle when he joined Zeds Dead’s Deadbeat label.
DNMO’s first full body of work “Definition Forbidden” EP was released on April 19 and is a four-track tour de force, encompassing all of DNMO’s signature sounds in an artfully-crafted arc. A beat drops at the two-second mark of pop-leaning track “No Way Out,” and there’s no pressing pause until the final power-drill basslines of “Olifant” have perforated your brain.
Stream the title track off DNMO’s EP, “Definition Forbidden,” to find out how bone-buzzing bass, gauzy vocals, and a piano outro can coexist. And then check back here next week to discover more of what’s next in music, first on SoundCloud.
