Kicking off “First on SoundCloud” 2020 with DIY artist Che Lingo

We launched “First on SoundCloud” in 2018 to celebrate some of SoundCloud’s most promising new acts and give them a platform to accelerate their careers. Since then, FOSC alums have gone on to reshape the R&B landscape and be nominated for Grammys (Kehlani), build their own labels and Vogue-backed fashion brands (Peggy Gou), and release award winning albums while staying independent (Little Simz). This year’s class spans genres and geos, but all embody the originality, connectivity and DIY work ethic that are core to the SoundCloud creator community. And they’re poised to continue this winning streak.
The first stop on our 2020 run takes us to London, the stomping grounds of grime/rap heavyweight and introspective lyricist Che Lingo. Born and raised in the SW borough of Wandsworth, Che embodies the DIY mentality. He first found his passion for music writing in local youth clubs, and though Che couldn’t afford professional studio time, he still made his way onto BBC radio at just 16 through sheer talent and hustle.

By shopping around links and DMing producers for collaboration on SoundCloud, Che realized the power in doing things on your own terms.
“As things grow and you get bigger and more people join your team, you really have to do your best to maintain that power, but obviously you have to know what that looks like first. And for me, I learned what that power looks like and how to use that in the right way from SoundCloud.”

Since then he’s brought his authenticity and DIY attitude to the mainstream, collaborating with rappers like Mick Jenkins, Ghetts, and LIKE, and signing to Idris Elba’s “7Wallace” label. With his debut album “The Worst Generation” due this autumn it seems the “Wizard of Wandsworth” will be casting his spell on the world in no time. More of what’s next
Every two weeks for the next few months, we’ll be introducing you to another “First on SoundCloud” rising star. Next up is an indie rock/soul singer who started her journey with a Lisa Frank notebook and her dad’s guitar before discovering the simple math behind growing her community – and confidence as an artist.

You can DIY too
Inspired by Che’s DIY ethos? On SoundCloud, there’s nothing stopping you from uploading your music right now and sharing it with the world. And because your tracks should sound and look great when someone lands on your profile, we’ve created an easy way for you to add album art and “design it yourself” with these customizable templates.
If you’re First on SoundCloud too, we want to hear you. When you upload original music tag it #SCFIRST for the chance to be promoted across SoundCloud’s playlists, social media, newsletters, this blog – and maybe even see your name in a future First on SoundCloud campaign.
