Meet August’s Artists and DJs to Watch

Meet August’s Artists and DJs to watch. If you follow us on Instagram and/or Twitter you already know that this month’s roster was one of our most eclectic yet — including a rapper who’s just as confident with a tattoo gun as she is with a pen and a “high priestess of the Motherbeat.”

Even if you think you’ve heard it all, this month’s group of talent is sure to expand your horizons. Read on to meet the artists and DJs helping us close out the summer on a high note.

DJs to Watch

Volvox

  • Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
  • Genre(s): Techno
  • Fun fact: She is an original member of the Discwoman collective
  • Advice for the next generation pushing for social change: “All the tools you need to create change are at your fingertips. You don’t need anybody’s approval to get started. Invent the world you want to see in your own life and watch the waves spread out from there. “

Eris Drew

  • Hometown: Chicago, IL
  • Genre(s): Techno
  • Fun fact: She’s a “high priestess of the Motherbeat”
  • Advice for the next generation pushing for social change: “A raver keeps dancing after the party is over. Even when no one is around. On street corners, in your bedroom, in the forest. Whatever you do right now to be safe, don’t stop movin’.”

ANZ

  • Hometown: Manchester, UK
  • Genre(s): Hardcore, Techno & Jungle
  • Fun fact: Her latest EP is dedicated in part to “the boys who used to muscle her off the decks at house parties”
  • Advice for the next generation pushing for social change: “For allies: be ready to get things wrong. It’s kinda inevitable. But be more prepared to put things right, in a meaningful way. Be ready to decenter yourself and think bigger than you. Think with complete empathy for the struggles that aren’t your own. Act with heart. And for the marginalized: take time, find the enjoyment in your days. It’s hard out here! And when you’re ready to fight again, remember — no matter how much society has conditioned you to think otherwise, you have impact. Your voice has meaning. Hold your head up high.”

KG

  • Hometown: London, UK
  • Genre(s): UK Funky, House & UK Garage
  • Advice for the next generation pushing for social change: “For those fighting for change, the aim outrightly is to be informational, not confrontational. Tackle topics/causes you have the range for and research more on those you don’t. Uncontrolled rage taints the overall message. Step outside of the echo chambers and strategically mobilize. Rest, recuperating in between — all forms of activism too. Avoid trauma porn — it is counterproductive and mentally destabilizing! Allies, do the deep work. This is not an overnight thing. Look past empty symbols of solidarity and learn how to use your privilege to fight for equity, equality for marginalized groups and positively influence the systems that only benefit you.”
