Jean We’re On The Fringe, And We’re Loving It

Greetings from Edinburgh, Scotland, where we’ve been camped out for three days in the SoundCloud Shack. It’s a little old place that we’ve set up to connect with all the audio & music creators and lovers who have come to Edinburgh to enjoy the Festival Fringe.

The SoundCloud Shack makes its global debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Right in the heart of the Fringe on the Royal Mile, we’re welcoming everyone to come to the Shack to check out product demos, enjoy some free cotton candy (orange, of course) and recharge their phones. We’ve got ponchos and umbrellas when the weather goes cloudy. And we’re here to chat all about audio on SoundCloud.

The Shack’s also a performance space: we’re inviting audio creators who are here at the Festival to do pop-up sets and record podcasts.

David Deery spoke to Gemma Whelan — she’s in two shows at Fringe, and you also might recognize her from her starring role as Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.

Dave Pickering recorded an episode of Getting Better Acquainted and Stu Goldsmith also swung by to record The Comedian’s Comedian Podcast.

Stu Goldsmith and guest chat…puppets.

Bryony Hawkins and her guests provided a bit of darker humor with a live recording of Standup Tragedy.

SoundCloud at Ed Fringe 2013Haven’t gotten to swing by the Shack yet? Good news: we’ll be here until Monday. Not in Edinburgh this year? No problem: follow the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the next best thing to being here.

Jean Rails Girls Summer of Code: Welcoming Nicole and Laura

Two women. One summer. Big-time coding dreams.”  Nicole and Laura are spending this summer as interns at SoundCloud, mentored by SoundCloud engineers. They’re here as participants in Rails Girls Summer of Code: an initiative focused on bringing more women into the world of open source.

We took a few minutes to chat about what inspired them to get into programming, what they’re working on with their SoundCloud mentors, and how being part of Rails Girls is helping them to gain access to new career opportunities.

We’re glad to say that Laura and Nicole will be here all summer.  Follow their coding adventures on their Tumblr, on their daily log, and on Twitter. We can’t wait to see what they build!

Jean Join Us In Austin at the SoundCloud Creator Clubhouse

Breakfast tacos all round: we’re up early this morning in Austin getting ready to open the SoundCloud Creator Clubhouse. Starting tomorrow, we’ll be hosting a two-day celebration of our music and audio community, with a Tumblr & SoundCloud community meetup, as well as appearances by new and emerging artists including The-Dream, The Nerdist Podcast, and SoundCloud Hero Jamie Black.

Public School's Jay B Sauceda models the play button table. And a cool hat.

Public School’s Jay B, play button table, sweet hat.

To bring SoundCloud to life at the Waller Creek Boathouse, we’ve been working with the team from Public School, an Austin-based design studio. They’ve art directed and installed the sound, lighting, and visual installations. They’ve also used quite a bit of orange paint, not to mention hundreds of feet of bungee cord.

Here’s Public School’s Jay B talking about how they’ve transformed the space:

There’s still time to get a Clubhouse membership. RSVP and then stop by from 4 PM tomorrow, May 12th, to catch the action (and enjoy some complimentary pick-me-ups from Blue Bottle Coffee and Red Bull). And don’t forget to check in to the SoundCloud Creator Clubhouse on Foursquare, follow and tweet #creatorclubhouse on Twitter, and catch our live updates on Tumblr. See you there!
