David Tea(m) Time with Tiago Loureiro

Today, please help me welcome Tiago Loureiro to the SoundCloud team in Berlin in this weeks edition of Tea(m) Time!

Hi there! Thanks for the interview- can you say “hi” to everyone in your native language?
Olá !

How many languages do you speak?
Hmmm… Portuguese, English, Spanish and Estonian… hopefully German soon as well :)

How did you get introduced to SoundCloud?
A little over a year ago I was trying to learn how to play the guitar online (by the way, I am using http://justinguitar.com/ , he is just awesome). In some parts of the training, he wants you to guess the names of the chords that he is playing and he used SoundCloud to upload his music! I thought those waveforms looked soooo cool so I had to investigate where they came from and one year later here I am!

What is your role at SoundCloud?
I’m a Backend developer.

What is your favorite sound?
Depends on the mood but the range is wide! I was very much into trance (Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, etc..) but now I tend to go for Jack Johnson or some more laid back kind of music… if I need to code, trance still gets me focused.

What sound do you hate?
I still can’t get around to enjoy psy-trance nor drum n bass.

If you had 3 words to describe yourself, what would they be?
Backpacker, open-minded, calm.

How is it working at such an International and diverse office?
Simply awesome! For more details, you really have to join ;)

When you are not working, what do you love to do? What are you passionate about?
Traveling! Most of my free time (and money!) goes into traveling! There’s something about going around with a backpack and not knowing where you are going sleep, what the next city/country is going to be. If I am not traveling, then you can probably find me either: watching a movie at home, playing football, having a beer with friends at the pub or trying to improve my guitar skills.

Why should someone apply to SoundCloud?
The people! The product! The atmosphere in the office is just awesome, it’s great to be at ‘work’. It’s amazing how long people stay at work without even noticing…

Thanks so much for the great interview! Where can we find you on the interwebs?

Jane Tea(m) Time with Melissa Wong

Please give a warm welcome to Melissa Wong who joins SoundCloud’s Community Team in San Francisco. Hailing originally from San Diego and with a background in food, she engages with the community every day as a Community Support Specialist and is running SoundCloud’s first food program. Say hello!

Hi! Thanks for doing this interview! Can you introduce yourself?
Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a little better. I have been working at SoundCloud for just over 6 weeks and have been loving every minute of it! I’m originally from San Diego but moved up to the Bay Area to complete my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley. Having created my own Interdisciplinary Studies major about technology and interpersonal relationships, I am delighted that I now get to engage with an online community everyday!

Can you take a minute and let us know what you do at SoundCloud?
I am proud to be the first Community Support Specialist in San Francisco. There’s a high chance that if you write into the SoundCloud help center and receive a response during waking Pacific Standard Time, it will be from me!

You are working from the San Francisco office is that correct? What do you love most about San Fran?
Hmmm…I’ve never been good at picking favorites. I will say that, after living in San Francisco, I will never be able to live in a flat place again. The terrain here is not only breathtaking but is reflective of the people that live here: varied. I love that I live in a place where I can drive an hour and be in wine country, at the beach, hiking in the woods; that I live in a place where freelance street vendors, designers, programmers, panhandlers, dog walkers, and food lovers co-exist so seamlessly.

This is a question I always love asking – How did you get introduced to the ‘Cloud?
After working in the Bay Area food scene for several years, I thought it was time to delve into the sister industry of the Bay Area: tech startups. But I wasn’t looking to just work at any startup, I was looking for a company profile and mission that really matched my interests and values and SoundCloud just kept coming back to me as the company that embodied all that I loved and respected about how an online platform can make everyone’s lives brighter.

And this is an easy one – What are your favorite things about working at SoundCloud so far?
Although there are many standout reasons to want to work at SoundCloud, including having headquarters in Berlin and a genuine support for employees to engage in non-work related learning, I think the people are really what make this job amazing. From my lovely co-workers in the SF office, to the awesome Community team in Berlin, to the passionate and appreciative users I get to interact with every day–the people in the SoundCloud community are what make my job so fulfilling.

At the moment, what are your favorite sounds on the ‘Cloud?
I’ve been listening to M. Ward’s new album “Wasteland Companion” on repeat this Spring.

Recent favorite is alt-J’s “An Awesome Wave”.

Lastly, do you have any fun facts you can tell us about?
I am currently heading up the food program at the San Francisco office. Growing up as a picky eater (who didn’t eat fruit or vegetables!), my parents would never have imagined that I would make gastronomic decisions for other people….

David Tea(m) Time with Peter Brodsky

Today we have the honor of welcoming Peter Brodsky to the team. Peter will be joining us in Sofia and I asked him a few questions about his new role at SoundCloud and about his life in general. First, meet all the new SoundClouders who are joining the team in Sofia below in their audio “hello” then let’s get to know Peter better.

Hi there Peter! Thanks for the interview- can you say “hi” to everyone in your native language?

fprintf(stdout, “Hello, world!\n”); but that’s a little formal. Nowadays, most people just say printf(“Hello, world!\n”);

How did you get introduced to SoundCloud?

I found SoundCloud through a band that I love that released their last single via SC.

What is your role at SoundCloud?

We haven’t settled on a title yet. I proposed Director of Cool Stuff but my guess is that’s how most people at SoundCloud feel.

What is your favorite sound?

Spring crickets and frogs.

What sound do you hate?

A mosquito in my ear in the night in the dark. Obviously.

If you had 3 words to describe yourself, what would they be?

Pilot, sailor, entrepreneur.

What’s your favorite word?

How is it working at such an International and diverse office?

If you could say that you are passionate about anything, what would it be?

Deriving happiness from life.

Why do you think someone should apply to SoundCloud?

There are only a handful of companies in existence that will have a real impact on the world and still offer their employees a real opportunity to contribute. SoundCloud is one of those companies.

What do you like most about living in Sofia?

The adventure of living in a foreign country, speaking a foreign language and working in a foreign culture.

What are your favorite sounds on the cloud?

So, do you have any fun facts you would like to share?

I started programming when I was 10 on an old Apple IIc. I dropped out of middle school, graduated college with high honors but then dropped out again, this time from a PhD program. I speak several languages, and I know a respectable number of bad jokes. Here’s one of them: a baby seal walks into a club.
